Jeannie Courtney, CEO has been associated with residential treatment for 17 years. Jeannie designed, developed and facilitated an innovative teen, parent and family program for a facility in Utah. In addition to program development, strategic planning and financial oversight responsibility at Spring Ridge Academy, Jeannie is actively involved in the training, community and academic components of the program. She has assembled a quality staff in her efforts to establish a school and program with strong emphasis on excellence and community. Jeannie's background includes teaching, training and other entrepreneurial endeavors. She received a B.A. in Education from Arizona State University.

Joseph Gubbins

Joe received his B.A. in English from DePaul University and his M.A. in Supervision and Administration from Roosevelt University. He has a wide range of experience in the field of education. Suzanne Courtney
Admissions Director

Suzie brings a rich history to her position at Spring Ridge Academy. She earned her B.A in Human Development at Prescott College and her Masters of Education and Human Relations from Northern Arizona University. Her work experience includes a position as Dean of Students in a transitional program in Utah and the roles of Community Supervisor and Community Director at Spring Ridge prior to moving into the Admissions Director/Parent Liaison position. She has further experience in the fields of child welfare, therapy and education from her positions at Child Protective Services, as well as experience in adventure education and wilderness therapy. In the role of Admissions Director, she utilizes her extensive experience and familiarity with Spring Ridge Academy’s philosophy and procedures to assist the families in their process while their daughter is enrolled in Spring Ridge.

Susan Coatney
Director of Administration

Susan
 joined the Admissions Department of Spring Ridge in 2003 and in 2013 took on the role of Director of Administration, overseeing all aspects of SRA.  She has been employed in the therapeutic boarding school environment since 1998. She was formerly the Director of Operations for a similar program located in the State of Arizona where her duties covered a variety of responsibilities from administrative and fiscal management to assisting with admissions. Her diverse experience includes sales and marketing, and more than 35 years of administrative, financial, and human resources management.  She enjoys life "off-the-grid" on 10 acres in the Bradshaw Mountains with her husband and multitude of animals that include donkeys, goats, chickens, and of course, dogs and cats.

Nancy Kelly, MA, LPC
Clinical Director


Nancy holds a Master of Arts degree in Counseling Psychology from Prescott College and has been in private practice for eleven years.  The focus of her graduate work was children and families, with the added specialization of working with sexually abused children.  Nancy’s work is multi-modal with a client centered philosophical base.  Her specialties include play therapy, guided imagery and hypnotherapy, parenting skills education, interpersonal communication and experiential interventions.

Susan Dougherty

Susan’s tenure at Spring Ridge began in 1998. Susan has held a variety of positions in the community offering her an understanding of Spring Ridge, inside and out. She joined Spring Ridge Academy as a community mentor, became a community supervisor and is currently the Assistant Community Director. Susan’s role encompasses training community mentors and community life directors, managing student supplies and logistics, and working with students and their families. Student life, program development and implementation, is a strong suite of Susan’s skill set.  Susan is a native to Arizona and strong believer in helping youth and their families. Work with children began while she was in high school in the COOP (Child Oriented Occupational Program) for 2 years. Susan’s other early career pursuits led her to Arizona College of Medical and Dental Careers. She graduated Magna Cum Laude and worked in the field until her son was born. Susan is devoted to her family.  She celebrated her daughter’s wedding in the spring of 2013 and is looking forward to the marriage of her son in early 2014.  One of Susan’s newest passions is Scuba Diving.  She and her husband can often be found exploring new underwater places.

Kate Deily

Kate has been a part of the Spring Ridge Academy family for many years.  Kate arrived at SRA in 1997 as one of the very first students.  Although she never imagined then, she went on to hold numerous positions with Spring Ridge, giving her a unique perspective on the philosophy, history, and spirit of Spring Ridge.  She has worked at SRA in administration, as well as in the community as Community Mentor, Supervisor and Community Life Director.  Outside of SRA Kate spent time as a preschool teacher and nanny.  Kate received her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Kaplan University, and rejoined the Spring Ridge team in the Admissions department.  Every day Kate brings a passion for helping families and uses her personal knowledge to assist families in the enrollment process.  Kate’s relationship with students and their families extends many years; she is an ongoing support to alumni.  Kate loves watching football with her dog, Freckles, by her side.

Kimberly Campbell, MA, LAC

Kimberly
 earned her Master’s Degree in Community Mental Health Counseling from Argosy University in Phoenix, AZ.  She obtained an AAS degree in Chemical Dependency from Rio Salado University in Tempe, AZ and completed her undergraduate degree in Social Work from Westmar College in LeMars, IA.  Kimberly worked and trained with Pia Melody and Claudia Black at The Meadows Treatment Center in Wickenburg, AZ.  During her 2 ½ years of employment with this renowned treatment center for addiction and trauma she worked primarily with persons struggling with addictions and depression.  She completed a yearlong internship at Childhelp Children’s Center in Phoenix working with sexually abused children.  She continued working with sexually abused children until she joined the therapy team at Spring Ridge Academy in May of 2010.  Kimberly has trained in a variety of therapies including but not limited to Trauma Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Group Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, Sex Addiction in Women, Play Therapy, and Grief Therapy.

Susanne Costello, M.Ed

Susanne earned her Master’s Degree in Education with a focus on Clinical Counseling from Bridgewater State College in Bridgewater, Massachusetts.  Over the last 14 years her passion and expertise have led to working with adolescents, women, families and children.   Susanne comes from family systems and cognitive behavioral theoretical perspectives and has clinical expertise in addressing issues of neglect, abuse, trauma, bullying, drugs/alcohol, sexual perpetration, domestic violence, victim pathology and mental health disorders.  Her experience lends to working in school systems, crisis intervention call centers, on site at crime scenes with police to provide crisis intervention, in-home therapy, detoxification facilities, mental health hospitals, private agencies and always as part of a greater multidisciplinary team.  Susanne incorporates an eclectic therapeutic approach to treatment and has specialty training in Dialectical behavior therapy, trauma and vicarious trauma, suicide ideation and intervention, domestic violence, substance abuse and critical incident response training to crisis and trauma.  Susanne has recently relocated from Denver, Colorado and is in the process of pursuing her Arizona LPC.  She prides herself on developing trust and rapport with her clients to provide a safe therapeutic setting for healing to begin.

Cindy Fogel, MA

Cindy grew up in Minnesota and received her BA in 1984 from St. Cloud State University, St. Cloud, MN in Speech Communications and Business.  She went on to own and manage a successful chiropractic business in Prescott, AZ.  She attended the charter class of the Masters program at Prescott College, Prescott, AZ.  Cindy graduated with her Masters in Counseling Psychology in August 1993.  She worked with Social Services and was a supervisor of a Social Service agency.  She worked as a wilderness therapist for 12 years before joining the team at Spring Ridge Academy.  Cindy has been working therapeutically with adolescents and their families since 1991.    She has attended numerous trainings, workshops and conferences on mental health issues, substance abuse and effective therapeutic work with adolescents and families.  Cindy has extensive experience working with clients with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Reactive Attachment Disorder, adoption, Non-verbal Learning Disability, Depression, Anxiety,  anger management problems, substance abuse issues, sexual acting out, learning challenges, school failure/withdrawal, personality disorders, eating disorders, self harm, victims of physical and sexual abuse, grief and loss issues and issues related to self-image and self-identity.  Cindy employs a multi-modal approach to her therapy that helps students take accountability for their actions and attitudes.  Students learn to take responsibility for the effect that these actions and attitudes have had on their life and the lives of others.  Cindy supports students in creating realistic treatment goals and the development of strengths and skills that can enhance self-esteem and confidence.   Cindy loves to spend time with her family connecting with the natural world.  She is active in hiking, biking, boating, and yoga.

Jenny Tempel received her Masters in the Science of Counseling at the University of Great Falls in her home state of Montana. Jenny recently moved from Montana to Arizona with her two children in April of 2013. While in Montana, Jenny was licensed as an addictions counselor (LAC) and a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC). She enjoys working with children, adolescence and their families and has worked in a school and home environment for over 10 years. She specializes in addictions, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, attachment, family systems as well as anxiety and depression. Anna Seno, MSW, LMSW

Anna Seno comes to SRA with a range of experience in experiential leadership and therapeutic programming for children and adolescents. For over a decade she has devoted her career and volunteer efforts to working with adolescents and families in a variety of therapeutic settings including: wilderness therapy, mentoring programs, adventure leadership, school social work, and most recently, a therapeutic boarding school.  Anna values multifaceted learning through cultural, academic, and social experiences and  has guided groups of teenagers and young adults on leadership and community service programs throughout the world.  Due to her extensive work with adolescents, she has a range of experience working with teen challenges including bullying, self-esteem, peer and family relationships, and trauma. In her work,  Anna uses an eclectic approach combining family systems, person centered, and dialectical behavior therapy. She has a Master's Degree in Social Work from Ohio University and comes from North Carolina as a Licensed Clinical Social Work Associate. In addition she is a certified Ashtanga Yoga instructor and uses yoga and meditation in her work with teenagers. Anna is an avid outdoor enthusiast and believes in the inherent value of nature as a tool for spiritual growth and well being.

Daniel Omans, LMSW

Daniel
earned his Masters of Social Work from Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Recently, Daniel was on a team of clinicians in Wayne County that specialized in the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.  The team provided weekly training workshops and ongoing group sessions for children and their parents. Daniel also brings a substantial history of working with adolescents in residential programs. His focus has been on family systems, and he has worked with children and their families in a variety of mental and behavioral health settings.

Leslie Filsinger, MA, LPC

Leslie was raised in Michigan and did her undergraduate work at Olivet College in Michigan, and she received her Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology from Cleveland State University in Ohio.  Leslie was licensed as a Licensed Professional Counselor in Ohio where she worked in community mental health and private practice.  Leslie and her husband moved to New York in 1989, and she joined a hospital staff to assist them in developing the family therapy component of a newly-opened in-patient adolescent psychiatric unit.  Licensed as a LMHC (Licensed Mental Health Counselor) and also a NCC (National Certified Counselor), Leslie has spent the last twenty years working with adolescents and their families as a therapist at a co-educational residential treatment center in Jamestown, New York.  Leslie has expertise in treating trauma, neglect, attachment disorders, sexual abuse and sexual deviancy.  Leslie utilizes a trauma-informed, solution focused approach to treatment.  She has specialized training in emergency mental health, trauma focused therapies, Post Induction Therapy and EMDR.  In addition to her work as a therapist, Leslie and her husband are proud parents of four adult children.  Now licensed in Arizona as a LPC, Leslie is excited to work with the students and their families at Spring Ridge Academy.

Heidi Reaves
Art Instructor

 
Heidi has been an Art Instructor for both public and private schools since 1994. She earned her BS in Art Education with an Emphasis in Art History at Northern Arizona University in 1994. She began her teaching career at Woodard Junior High School teaching 7th and 8th grade Art, and taught there for eight years. She was active in Yearbook, Odyssey of the Mind as a coach and judge, and participated in the after school program. She was an active member of the Yuma Area Art Educators, and served a year as their secretary. Heidi has been teaching at Spring Ridge Academy since 2002. With her creative and organizational abilities, she has developed a working rotating curriculum for the girls here at Spring Ridge Academy, and is always changing their artistic experiences based on her own work as a real Artist.

 
Erin Smith
Teacher:  English, Journalism, Health, Computer Applications


Erin was born in Worcester, Massachusetts, and throughout her childhood, attended schools in four different states. Her family settled in Tucson, Arizona in 2009, where she finished high school and attended the University of Arizona. She earned a Bachelors of Arts in English Language and Literature with a minor in Classics in 2006 and then moved to Prescott, Arizona to begin her teaching career at a charter school. In 2007, she began teaching composition courses at Yavapai College. Erin came to Spring Ridge Academy in the fall of 2008 and finished her Masters in Secondary Education through Grand Canyon University in December of that year.
Erin’s husband, Clay, operates a home for men with disabilities, where he, Erin, and their son Seamus live. In her rare spare time, Erin reads and writes novels and short stories, produces short films, quilts, dabbles in photography, and occasionally sings with her band.


Carol Sowards
Teacher:  French and Spanish

Carol Sowards grew up in the western states, including Oregon, Idaho, Colorado, California, Washington, and also Ohio.  She earned  a BA in Comparative Literature, French and English, from the University of California in Santa Barbara, which included a year studying abroad in Aix-en-Provence, France.  Becoming bi-lingual at that time, Carol traveled with other students through Europe and Russia.    She began to write poetry and short stories, captivated by the possibilities of words and languages.  She published in the literary journals of the northwest. 
Carol returned to graduate school in the early 1980’s, where she earned Masters Degrees in English and Creative Writing from Eastern Washington University. She relocated to California to be with her significant other.  After her son was born, she returned to Idaho amidst the changing face of the farming and ranching communities of the American West.  She realized a strong desire to teach and, while living on the family ranch, obtained her Teacher’s Certificate from Lewis-Clark State College in 2007, through one of the first online programs, PACE.  
In 2004, Carol re-located to Prescott, Arizona, to become part of one of Arizona’s first co-housing communities. 

 
Ken Stubbe
Teacher:  Mathematics 

 
Ken was born, raised and lived most of his life in central Iowa.  Following high school, he worked for a manufacturer of zinc and aluminum die-castings for 21 years.  During those 21 years, he had a broad spectrum of duties ranging from machine operator, machine shop foreman, shift supervisor, tool designer and process engineer.  He entered college full time in 2001 earning his BA degree in Mathematics Education from University of Northern Iowa in December of 2005.  Ken is certified to teach grade 6 – 12 mathematics in the state of Arizona.  He taught at charter schools in the Prescott area and has been at Spring Ridge Academy since August of 2007.

 
Justin Zych 
Teacher:  English, Environmental Science, Women's Comparative Studies, Personal Finance

 
Justin received his B.A. in Environmental Studies from Prescott College in 1997 and minored in Creative Writing and Journalism.  After receiving his bachelor’s degree, Justin accepted a job working in the geophysical industry functioning as a surveyor for a petroleum land management company in the oil fields of Texas and Oklahoma.  From the fall of 1997 to the summer of 1998 Justin gathered and processed theodolite data and studied cartography for oil exploration in the western United States.  In January of 2000 he earned his M.A. degree at Prescott College.  His thesis research and practicum featured the complex interrelationships between economics and ecosystems.  Eventually, this work resulted in the development and implementation of a Comparative Studies curriculum he co-taught with Alison Wiggers at Spring Ridge Academy in the fall of 2001.  He hasn’t left SRA since.  Justin is certified to teach English and Environmental Studies in the State of Arizona.  He is a mentor and graduate advisor at Prescott College and is preparing to train Arizona teachers, through the Ford Partnership for Advanced Studies, for a new curriculum that seeks to prepare tomorrows leaders for a global economic marketplace.


Kyleen Wolfson
Teacher: Health and Fitness

Kyleen has been involved with physical fitness for the majority of her life. Over the past two years, her workouts have evolved into rigorous training in the sport of CrossFit. Through this training, Kyleen has experienced both emotional and physical transformation, fueling her passion for health and wellness.  This passion for physical fitness and the desire to help others has positioned Kyleen to train and coach individuals toward overcoming physical barriers and to promote their emotional healing.  In 2014, Kyleen obtained her CrossFit Trainers Certificate and has since obtained additional certifications in specialized areas of CrossFit techniques. Kyleen has lived in Prescott for the past eight years, working in the areas of substance abuse and trauma recovery.  She earned a BA in Human Development and Visual Arts from Prescott College, and she is very excited about bringing her passion, training and experience to Spring Ridge Academy. 


Gretchen Foster
Teacher: Yoga and Dance

Gretchen moved to Prescott from Northern Vermont in 1998 to attend Prescott College where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Wilderness Therapy with a minor in Dance. As a child, Gretchen was always dancing, and she was taking yoga lessons by the age of twelve. The connection to her body, developed through yoga and dance, has allowed her to navigate some of life’s difficult challenges. Prior to Spring Ridge Academy, Gretchen worked with various therapeutic programs and outdoor schools as a wilderness instructor, a dance and yoga teacher and an adventure education instructor. Gretchen is passionate about sharing the ways that the yoga and dance can be used to heal body issues and develop a loving relationship with self.  In her spare time, Gretchen enjoys rock climbing, riding her mountain bike and most of all, spending time with her three-year-old son, Liam.

Rick Derman
Teacher: Social Studies

Rick Derman has been teaching history in Arizona schools since 2008. He grew up in an arts oriented environment on the east coast, where his interest in art and history led him to an interdisciplinary doctoral program at the University of Pennsylvania. After earning a Bachelors degree in History, Rick earned a Masters degree from Penn in American Civilization. During his doctoral studies, Rick became interested in television’s effect upon children. He left his doctoral program prior to dissertation to develop educational television programming. Rick has taught at colleges and prep-schools in the east and spent over twenty years on the creative side of television production in broadcast and cable. He worked in New York City government as an Urban Fellow in the Office of the Special Assistant to the Mayor and as a free-lance writer. During his career in the television industry Rick received numerous industry honors, including two Emmy Awards. Then, after witnessing the collapse of the World Trade Center and picking up debris from the catastrophe that had blown into their front yard in Brooklyn, Rick and his wife, Maria, moved to Prescott in 2005. Maria is a retired clinical psychotherapist. Rick and Maria have a son who lives in Brooklyn and a dog who lives with them in Prescott.


Dr. Ted Whitworth
Teacher: Science

Dr. Ted Whitworth received a Bachelor of Science degree as a double major in Biology and History, with a minor in Chemistry, from the University of Texas at Brownsville.  He received a Master of Science degree in Biology, with a focus in Parasitology, from The University of Texas at San Antonio/Health Science Center and a Ph.D. in Pathology from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston.  He has had a long career studying the pathology of infectious diseases and is well published in his field.  He teaches part-time at Prescott College and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.  He sees his position at Spring Ridge Academy as an opportunity to inspire young women to pursue careers in the sciences.  In his spare time, he enjoys hiking with his wife and family, visiting with his daughter in Texas, and playing golf.  He is also the owner of a German shepherd (Raji), and two pound rescues (Fred and Leia).


Rick Gross
Teacher: Math

Rick Gross earned his B.S. in Management and Technology from the Unites States Naval Academy and shortly thereafter became a commissioned Officer in the United States Navy. After his military service, Rick was employed by a defense contractor involved in the design and manufacture of the Tomahawk Cruise Missile system.  Rick began his teaching career in 1989 as a math and science instructor for the Humboldt Unified School District in Arizona. Rick attended Northern Arizona University, where he earned masters degrees in teaching Physical Science and teaching Mathematics. Rick and his wife Gail reside in Prescott Valley.


Clay Smith
Teacher:  English, Creative Writing


Clay was born in a small town in northern Arkansas, where, completely by accident, he discovered Shakespeare. He dabbles in photography and design, and he enjoys reading, especially the minor classics, and watching obscure foreign movies. Clay moved to Arizona in 1995 and is now a first-year teacher with a BA in English Literature from Grand Canyon University. Clay was first introduced to the SRA philosophy and methods by his wife, Erin, who invited him to go through the Challenge and Action workshops.  He believes strongly in the power of education and introspection to affect personal change, and he is very pleased to have the opportunity to be a part of the unique environment SRA provides to its students.


Lisa Rubenbauer, RN

Lisa is an Iowa transplant and found her new home in Arizona during 2001.  Lisa is a Registered Nurse with ten years of experience specializing in psychiatric care; she has worked in inpatient and crisis triage environments.  Lisa enjoys the outdoors; during her free time, will be found hiking, camping, fishing or exploring the area on her ATV.  Lisa is very excited about joining the Spring Ridge Academy team. 

Debbie Griffin

Debbie
joined the Spring Ridge Academy staff in 2010 with over 15 years of behavioral health experience. Initially Debbie worked as a Community Mentor learning the Spring Ridge philosophy and standards of excellence. In 2011 she took on additional responsibilities becoming a Supervisor to Community Mentors.  Currently, Debbie serves as a Community Life Director.  Through the last couple of years Debbie’s growth and development as part of the Spring Ridge Academy team has been tremendous.  Debbie holds a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies emphasizing in Administrative Justice from Northern Arizona University and holds an Associate of Art degree from Yavapai College.  Debbie’s vast professional and personal experience adds to her role with our students and their families.  Debbie has three adult children and enjoys motorcycle rides through Jerome to Oak Creek Canyon with her husband for ice cream.

Angie McFadin

Angie
was born in Missouri where she worked her way through college while raising her children.  She graduated with a double Bachelor degree in Psychology and Criminal Justice from Drury College in 1995.  After obtaining her degree Angie worked at a men’s Federal Prison as a guard for nine years.  She gained a love for helping people which led her to become a Corrections Counselor for two years.  She moved to Arizona in 2005 and came to work for Spring Ridge Academy as a Community Mentor in 2007.  In 2012 Angie moved into the Community Life Director position.  Her hobbies include hiking and exploring old mines and ghost towns.

Kymberly Tindall
Community Life Director

Kymberly
 received a Bachelor of Art in Music from the University of Dayton and a Masters in Business from Benedictine University.  Part of her undergraduate work was an internship in music therapy and a certification as a music therapist.  Before coming to SRA, she developed and ran a strong Music Therapy company in New Jersey.  During her time as a music therapist, she worked with many different populations including; teens in therapeutic foster care, adult mental health, geriatrics, children and adolescents with disabilities, children and families in crisis, and in-patient hospital.   Kymberly brings an excitement and passion for problem-solving, experiential learning, and providing many opportunities for change.  Kymberly’s experience in experiential techniques and expressive arts adds a creative component to her work with students.  She enjoys hiking, gardening, reading, and spending time outside with her pit bull, Bean.

Sarah Keefe

Sarah joined Spring Ridge early in 2013 as a Community Coach and quickly began making her mark.  She brought four years of experience working with teens in various forms of behavioral health environments.  Sarah is currently enrolled in classes with the goal of entering the Masters of Social Work program.  Sarah’s hard work and focus on the families has made her an excellent fit for the new position of Transition and Alumni Specialist. In her new role, Sarah will work with both current and alumni SRA families, assisting them navigate the many demands of transitioning into the real world.  Spring Ridge is excited to launch this new position, and Sarah looks forward to working with our families.

Returning to the place she has always considered home, Neysa was raised in Prescott and is a graduate of Prescott High School.  At 18 she enlisted in the Army National Guard and served for 21.5 years before retiring.  She has worked in both large corporate environments and small private businesses.  Neysa graduated from Scottsdale Culinary Institute in 2004, earning both an Associate Degree and Le Cordon Bleu Diplôme.  She has worked as an intern/pantry cook at Elements at the Sanctuary on Camelback Mountain and as Chef de Partie for The Phoenician.  She is looking forward to sharing her culinary knowledge and experience with the students and staff here at Spring Ridge Academy.

Kevin Hornberger
Food Services

Born and raised in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Kevin took an early interest towards cooking.  Starting off washing dishes, he worked his way up earning positions of Sous Chef and Head Chef at various Pennsylvania restaurants.  Kevin has extensively travelled throughout the U.S. and gleaned several culinary skills during his travels, finally settling in Arizona during 2011 to be close to his family and then getting married in 2013.  Along with his wife, step-daughter and cat, Kevin continues his joy for both cooking and for life and he plans to bring both to Spring Ridge.
